If you stepped outside this morning in Tyler, Longview, or anywhere across East Texas, you probably felt that sticky, humid air. A classic weather pattern is brewing, and it's going to make for a rough couple of days. The KLTV First Alert Weather team has already sounded the alarm: we're looking at a serious outbreak of severe thunderstorms starting later today and rolling right through Saturday.

What's Heading Our Way

This isn't just another spring shower. We're talking about a powerful storm system that's going to tap into all that Gulf moisture and send instability skyrocketing. The national weather centre has already placed a large part of our area under an enhanced risk—that's a level 3 out of 5—for both today and tomorrow. The main threats? Damaging straight-line winds that could knock down trees and power lines, large hail, and a few quickly developing tornadoes can't be ruled out. The window for the worst weather looks to be late afternoon into the evening, and then again Saturday afternoon and evening.

Your Pocket-Sized Storm Tracker

When the sky turns that ominous greenish colour, you don't want to be scrambling for info. That's where the KLTV First Alert Weather app comes in. We've been fine-tuning it, and the latest versions are live now. Whether you're on an iPhone (we're on Version 5.15.409 for iOS) or an Android user (that's Version 517000706 for Android), the app gives you hyperlocal radar that you can access right at your fingertips. You can set it to alert you only if your specific location is in the danger zone—no false alarms for the next county over.

Make sure you've got location services turned on and notifications enabled. That way, if we have to issue a warning, you'll know about it even if you're out on the lake or trying to round up the kids and get them inside.

How to Prep Before the Sky Falls

We've been through this rodeo before, East Texas. Let's run through the checklist so nobody's caught off guard:

  • Charge your devices. Power outages are likely. Have those portable battery packs ready.
  • Secure loose yard items. Trampolines, patio furniture, and trash cans become missiles in 60+ mph winds.
  • Know your safe spot. Interior room, lowest level, away from windows. If you're in a mobile home, know where the nearest sturdy shelter is.
  • Keep multiple ways to get warnings. Don't rely on just an outdoor siren. Use the KLTV app, a NOAA weather radio, and local media.

Timing It Out

The first round of storms could fire up as early as mid-afternoon Friday. We'll see a bit of a lull overnight, but don't let that fool you. Saturday is shaping up to be the more active day, with another line of storms rolling through, capable of producing widespread wind damage. We'll be live on air and streaming on the app all weekend long, tracking every lightning bolt and every gust of wind.

This is one of those times you really want to stay weather-aware. Keep the KLTV First Alert Weather app handy, check in with us on air, and most importantly, have a plan. We'll get through this together, like we always do.
