If you stepped outside this morning in Tyler, Longview, or anywhere across East Texas, you probably felt that sticky, thick air. We've got a classic weather setup brewing, and it's set to make for a rough couple of days. The KLTV First Alert Weather team has already issued urgent warnings: we're expecting a serious outbreak of severe thunderstorms from later today and continuing right through Saturday.

What's Heading Our Way

This isn't just another spring shower. We're talking about a powerful storm system that's going to tap into all that moisture from the Gulf and send instability skyrocketing. The national weather centre has already placed a large part of our region under an enhanced risk—that's a level 3 out of 5—for both today and tomorrow. The main threats? Damaging straight-line winds that could bring down trees and power lines, large hail, and we can't rule out a few quick spin-up tornadoes. The worst of the weather looks set to hit late this afternoon into the evening, and then again on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Your Pocket-Sized Storm Tracker

When the sky turns that ugly greenish colour, you don't want to be scrambling for info. That's where the KLTV First Alert Weather app comes in. We've been fine-tuning it, and the latest versions are live now. Whether you're on an iPhone (we're on Version 5.15.409 for iOS) or you're an Android user (that's Version 517000706 for Android), the app gives you hyper-local radar that you can pull up right at your fingertips. You can set it to alert you only if your specific location is in the firing line—no false alarms for the next county over.

Make sure you've got location services turned on and notifications enabled. That way, if we need to issue a warning, you'll know about it even if you're out on the lake or trying to wrangle the kids inside.

How to Prep Before the Sky Falls

We've been through this before, East Texas. Let's run through the checklist so no one gets caught off guard:

  • Charge your devices. Power outages are likely. Have those portable battery packs ready to go.
  • Secure loose items in the yard. Trampolines, outdoor furniture, and bins can become missiles in 60+ mph winds.
  • Know your safe spot. An internal room, the lowest level, away from windows. If you're in a mobile home, know where the nearest sturdy shelter is.
  • Have multiple ways to get warnings. Don't rely just on an outdoor siren. Use the KLTV app, a NOAA weather radio, and local media.

Timing It Out

The first round of storms could fire up as early as mid-afternoon Friday. We'll see a bit of a lull overnight, but don't let that fool you. Saturday is shaping up to be the more active day, with another line of storms rolling through, capable of causing widespread wind damage. We'll be live on air and streaming on the app all weekend long, tracking every bolt and every gust.

This is one of those times you really want to stay weather-aware. Keep the KLTV First Alert Weather app handy, check in with us on air, and most importantly, have a plan. We'll get through this together, like we always do.
