Birkebeinerrennet 2026

It's one of the true highlight days in Norwegian winter sports, but this year the Birkebeinerrennet is throwing a little extra challenge at participants even before the starting signal. The Skatebirken, which was scheduled for today, has been delayed by two hours. The organizers confirmed this from the race secretariat in Rena on Saturday morning. For those of us who have been coming here for years, it brings to mind both the 2015 Birkebeinerrennet, when heavy snowfall wreaked havoc, and the 2016 race, when the bitter cold caused trouble. But this year, a different weather phenomenon is calling the shots.

New Start Time and Safety First

The roughly 3,000 registered participants for the skate skiing portion will need to be patient. Instead of 9:30 AM, the start is now set for 11:30 AM. The reason is heavy snowfall and poor visibility on the slopes leading up to Sjøsjøen. Trail crews are working overtime to groom the tracks again, and participant safety is, of course, the top priority. There's no drama here, really – just plain common sense. We've seen it before: the Birkebeinerrennet is a race where people and nature meet, and times have to be adjustable.

The Atmosphere in Rena Despite the Delay

The atmosphere in Rena, however, remains unfazed. RVs are packed closely together, and people have lit campfires and are brewing coffee. For many, this is the highlight of their year. One guy from Tromsø I chatted with grinned slyly: "I've been waiting for this for two years. An extra two hours doesn't matter; it just means I can drink more coffee and really get my head in the game." That's the attitude we love about this race – whether it's classic or skate, whether the clock is ticking or not.

  • Skatebirken: New start time 11:30 AM from Rena.
  • Classic Division: Proceeding as planned tomorrow morning.
  • Trail Conditions Right Now: Soft, fresh snow at the start, but good conditions as the trail climbs.
  • Tip for Participants: Don't stress, soak in the atmosphere, and conserve your energy.

A Reminder of History's Presence

For those of us who have followed the Birkebeinerrennet for many years, days like this remind us why we love this race. In 2015, it was extreme amounts of snow that defined the race; in 2016, it was brutally cold temperatures. Both years, people still showed up, and both years produced memorable editions. This year's edition seems to be following that track: Challenges create the best stories. When the skate skiers finally get underway later this morning, it's guaranteed to be a celebration from start to finish. The Birkebeinerrennet is more than just a ski race – it's a community celebration and a tribute to a legend. And this year, we get an extra hour or two to enjoy it.

We're keeping our eyes on the trail and will update you with the latest news throughout the day. For now, we're just looking forward to watching the first skate skiers disappear into the forest towards Mjøsa. Birkebeinerrennet 2026 is underway – delayed, but definitely underway!
