If you were out and about in Basel or Zurich on Saturday, you would have felt it. That air mass moved in. Not just “a bit cooler”, but that sharp, biting freshness that cuts right through you. Now it's getting serious. The polar front, which had already caused chaos in northern Germany, is now swinging its full force towards us in Switzerland. If you thought spring was all locked in, you’d better scrap those plans real quick.

Switzerland weather snow polar front

I was checking the latest weather charts last night, something I’ve been doing for the past twenty years, and honestly? Even the veteran meteorologists are tipping their hats to this weather shift. This isn’t just a minor cold snap. It’s a turbulent change that we rarely experience at this time of year. The models have been downgraded consistently over the last 48 hours. What does this mean for us? It’s not just going to be wet; it’s going to be white.

Snow all the way down to the Central Plateau? Here’s what’s coming

If you take a look at the current weather radar, you can clearly see the front rolling in from the northwest. The classic 'Bise' wind is showing its most unpleasant side. The key factor is the snow line. The forecasts are clear: the polar cold air will push the snow line down to around 600 metres today. By tonight and Tuesday morning, it could drop even lower. What that means is: in cities like Bern, Lucerne, or St. Gallen, it won’t just be rain. You could get a proper dump of snow that settles. I bet many people will be looking out their windows tomorrow morning and doing a double-take.

For those of you shaking your heads: yes, it’s unusual. But we’re used to it in Switzerland – April does what it wants. Still, this abrupt switch from feeling like almost summer back to winter is quite the statement. The official weather warning isn’t circulating for nothing. This isn’t a “maybe it’ll get a bit chilly” warning; it’s a “watch the roads” warning.

Key points for the next few hours

  • Road conditions: Icy patches and slush, especially in the mornings. Summer tyres? A real risk, not just on the Gotthard.
  • Temperatures: Highs around 4 degrees. With the icy wind, the ‘feels-like’ temperature will easily dip below zero. Time to dig out those winter beanies again.
  • Snow line: Dropping to 600 metres and below. The Central Plateau and cities could also turn white.
  • Duration: The polar air mass is sticking around until at least Wednesday. It’ll only slowly start to feel spring-like again towards the end of the week.

I just took another look at the weather radar. Precipitation is really building up over the Jura and the Black Forest. That’s now heading straight into the Central Plateau. So if you have to head out this afternoon, expect a mix. Rain at first, then more and more snow as the cold air takes hold. The transition zones between 500 and 800 metres will get especially slippery this evening. Only one thing for it: stay calm, slow down, and point the car heater towards your feet – winter is making a brief comeback.

Tomorrow morning is going to be interesting. My guess is that things will be looking completely white at 7 am. Not just in the Alpine valleys, but in the city suburbs too. So, folks, wrap up warm, look out for one another, and maybe even enjoy the sight – after all, this much snow in April does have its charm. But don’t forget the shovel in the car if you absolutely have to drive. It’s going to be wild out there.
