If you were keeping your eyes open in Arlesheim late yesterday afternoon, you would have suddenly seen smoke rising above a multi-storey residential building along the well-known Hauptstrasse. The Basel-Landschaft police were alerted immediately – and several patrol cars rushed to the scene. The reason: a balcony fire that sounded pretty intense for a while, as one resident told me later in the evening.

The situation was serious, but thankfully the residents reacted quickly. The Basel-Landschaft police confirmed to me on site that no one was injured in the fire. That's the most important thing. The fire brigade brought the blaze under control fast – but one apartment on the affected floor is temporarily uninhabitable. The family had to leave the area, and friends and neighbours have taken them in. That's what I love about our community.

What exactly happened

According to initial findings from the Basel-Landschaft police, the fire broke out on a balcony on the first floor. The exact cause is still under investigation, but investigators aren't ruling anything out at this point. The scene of the fire has been cordoned off and evidence secured. A standard procedure for this kind of incident – the pros at the Basel-Landschaft police are working closely with the cantonal police.

  • Time of response: Around 4:30pm
  • Location: Arlesheim, near the village centre
  • Damage: One apartment temporarily uninhabitable, balcony completely burnt out
  • Injuries: None – that's the best news

A neighbour told me he first heard a loud bang, then saw smoke. "I called the Basel-Landschaft police straight away," he said. And they were really quick to arrive. The fire brigade from Arlesheim and the surrounding area also turned up in full force. They stopped the flames from spreading to other apartments. Hats off to the boys and girls in blue and orange.

What happens now

The Basel-Landschaft police have launched an investigation. A fire cause investigator has already been on site. It could have been a technical fault – or perhaps negligent behaviour? We'll find out in the coming days. The affected family is being supported by social services, and the municipality of Arlesheim is helping wherever it can.

For everyone breathing a sigh of relief: the balcony fire has been completely extinguished, and there's no longer any danger to the other tenants. But the Basel-Landschaft police are strongly warning against open flames on balconies, especially during dry weather. Even if it didn't look that way today – better safe than sorry.

I'll stay on this story – as soon as there's news from the Basel-Landschaft police press office, you'll hear it here. Until then: a big shout-out to the fast‑acting emergency crews who keep us all safe. And to the family, I wish them all the best – hopefully they'll be able to return to their own place soon.
