Balcony Fire in Arlesheim: Basel-Landschaft Police Investigate – Family Temporarily Homeless
If you happened to be keeping your eyes open in Arlesheim late on that afternoon, you would have suddenly seen smoke rising above an apartment building on the well-known main road. The Basel-Landschaft Police were alerted immediately – and rushed to the spot with several patrol cars. The reason: a balcony fire that, as a local resident told me later that evening, sounded pretty intense for a while.
The situation was serious, but luckily the residents reacted quickly. The Basel-Landschaft Police confirmed to me on the scene that no one was injured in the fire. That's the most important thing. The fire brigade got the blaze under control fast – however, one flat on the affected floor is currently uninhabitable. The family had to leave the area; friends and neighbours have taken them in. That's how it works around here.
What exactly happened
According to initial findings from the Basel-Landschaft Police, the fire broke out on a balcony on the first floor. The exact cause is still being investigated, but the investigators aren't ruling anything out at this stage. The scene of the fire has been sealed off, and evidence secured. The usual process in such an operation – the pros at Basel-Landschaft Police work closely with the cantonal police.
- Time of operation: Around 4:30 PM
- Location: Arlesheim, near the village centre
- Damage: One flat temporarily uninhabitable, balcony completely burnt out
- Casualties: None – that's the best news
A neighbour told me he first heard a loud bang, then there was smoke. "I called the Basel-Landschaft Police immediately," he said. And they were really quick to arrive. The fire brigade from Arlesheim and the surrounding area was also on site in full force. They prevented the flames from spreading to other flats. Hats off to the men and women in blue and orange.
What happens now
The Basel-Landschaft Police have launched an investigation. A fire cause investigator has already been there. Could it have been a technical fault – or maybe careless behaviour? That will become clear in the coming days. The affected family is being supported by social services, and the municipality of Arlesheim is helping wherever it can.
For everyone who can now breathe a sigh of relief: The balcony fire has been completely extinguished, and there is no further danger to the other tenants. But the Basel-Landschaft Police strongly warn against having open flames on balconies, especially in dry weather. Even if it didn't look that way today – caution is the better part of valour.
I'll stay on it; as soon as there are updates from the Basel-Landschaft Police press office, you'll hear it here. Until then: Cheers to the quick-response emergency crews who keep us all safe. And I wish the family all the best – hopefully, they can return to their own four walls soon.
