Well, here it comes. It's been nice and quiet for a while, but summer is making its presence known again. And not subtly. The sky over the coastal provinces is turning leaden grey, and the first strikes have already hit. The severe thunderstorms that have been hanging over the North Sea all afternoon have now truly moved inland. For Zeeland, North Holland, and also around the IJsselmeer and Texel, it's time to stay alert.

Yellow warning: not for nothing

The warning has been issued for good reason. We're not talking about a light summer shower that just gets you a bit wet; these are real crackers. Strong wind gusts are the main culprit. So, don't just tie down your garden furniture – bring it inside. I've already heard reports from Zeeland of branches being sent flying. It's exactly the kind of afternoon where you'd rather be curled up on the couch with a good book than out and about. The reality of this situation is simple: it's on its way, and it's hitting hard.

  • Zeeland: This is where it started. Brace for wind gusts that pack a serious punch.
  • Texel & IJsselmeer area: For anyone out on the water: head for a safe harbour. The showers are moving through quickly but are intense.
  • North Holland coast: From the coastline right through to inland areas, it could strike at any moment.

An irresistible force

There's something fascinating about this kind of atmospheric pressure. You can feel it coming. It's irresistible in the sense that you just have to step outside for a moment to feel that first blast of cold wind on your face. But for those among us who are sensitive to it, it can be a bit of a trial. For anyone with thunderstorm asthma, now is the time to keep windows shut and have your medication handy. Those huge pressure changes and the pollen being whipped up in the air are no fun for your lungs. Trust me, from experience, you're better off not challenging storms like these.

My tip for the day: just wait it out. Thankfully, the showers will pass through. It's not a day to head into town, but rather to stay home, light a candle, and enjoy the spectacle. As long as you're inside, the rumbling in the sky is actually quite something to watch. Hold onto your bike if you do have to go out, because the wind is no joke. Otherwise, things will calm down again this evening, as they always do after all this commotion in the sky.
