Well, here it is again. It’s been nice and quiet for a bit, but summer is making its presence known. And not just a little. The sky over the coastal provinces is turning a leaden grey, and the first strikes have already hit. The severe thunderstorms that have been hanging over the North Sea all afternoon have now truly made landfall. For Zeeland, North Holland, but also around the IJsselmeer and Texel, it’s time to be on alert.

Code Yellow: not just for fun

The warning isn’t issued for nothing. We’re not talking about a summer shower that will just get you a little wet, but real heavy-hitting storms. Strong wind gusts are the biggest culprit. So don’t just tie down your patio furniture; bring it inside. I’ve already heard reports from Zeeland that the first branches are flying through the air. It’s exactly the kind of afternoon where you’d rather be on the couch with a good book than out and about. The undeniable fact of the situation is simple: it’s coming, and it’s coming hard.

  • Zeeland: This is where it started. Expect wind gusts that can pack a serious punch.
  • Texel & IJsselmeer area: For those boating: find a safe harbour. The showers are moving quickly but are intense.
  • North Holland coast: From the shoreline well inland, it could hit at any moment.

An irresistible force

There’s something fascinating about this kind of atmospheric pressure. You can feel it coming. It’s irresistible in the sense that you just have to step outside for a moment to feel that first cold gust of wind on your face. But for those among us who are sensitive, it’s a bit of a challenge. For those with thunderstorm asthma, now is the time to keep the windows closed and have your medication handy. Those huge pressure changes and the pollen being whipped up in the air are no picnic for your lungs. Trust me, I know from experience that it’s better not to tempt fate with these kinds of storms.

My tip of the day is: just wait it out. Luckily, these showers will pass. It’s not a day to head into the city, but rather to light a candle at home and enjoy the show. As long as you’re inside, that rumbling in the sky is actually quite beautiful. Hold onto your bike if you absolutely have to go out, because this wind is no joke. And for the rest: calm will return tonight, as it always does after this kind of commotion in the sky.
