That's right, The Handmaid's Tale fans, you can get your hearts (and sofas) ready because the wait is finally coming to an end. The series adapting Margaret Atwood's book always left us wanting more and, after years of speculation, the direct sequel has finally come to life. I'm talking about The Testaments, the new production that promises to expand (and blow up) the dystopian universe we've learned to fear and love.

The Testaments - promotional poster

The first trailer has just dropped online and, by the looks of it, this production means business. The story is set fifteen years after the events of the original series, at a time when Gilead's totalitarian regime is still standing, but starting to show cracks from within. The brilliant twist? The story is told from the perspective of three women in completely opposite situations: Agnes, a young girl being raised to be a Commander's wife; Daisy, a girl living in Canada with no idea about her past; and our familiar, unsettling Aunt Lydia, who now has her own plans for the future.

What does the trailer reveal?

Anyone who's read the book (a Booker Prize winner, remember) knows Atwood delivered a fast-paced narrative full of twists. The trailer for The Testaments shows the adaptation is following suit. You can see scenes of pure tension, with an air of conspiracy, as well as glimpses of how female resistance begins to take shape within the very structures of power. The cinematography keeps that dark, oppressive tone that's its trademark, but with a hint of light peeking through — perhaps a sign that something big is about to change.

Ann Dowd is back as Aunt Lydia, and her character's attitude in the trailer suggests she's up to no good: she seems to be playing both sides, or maybe she's switched allegiances for good. The burning question is: will she help bring down the system she helped build? We'll have to watch to find out.

Star-Studded Cast and New Faces

Alongside the confirmed return of Ann Dowd, the series brings in some impressive new talent. Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday play Agnes and Daisy, respectively, and the chemistry between the two in the trailer already promises electrifying scenes. There's also room for old acquaintances: according to rumours (and those in the know about the filming), some familiar faces from the past might make special appearances. But, fair warning: not everyone is going to make it out alive.

Why The Testaments is Already the Most Anticipated Series of the Year?

Let's break down the reasons why this sequel is an unmissable event:

  • Margaret Atwood's blessing: the author actively participated in the adaptation, ensuring the essence of the book was preserved — and the book is even more intense than the original series.
  • Expanded universe: we'll get to see other corners of Gilead and even beyond, showing how the world reacts to the regime. Get ready for some breathtaking new scenery.
  • Female voices front and centre: three narrators, three points of view, three different struggles. The series promises to give a voice to those who have always been silenced.
  • Cinematic production: with the same team behind The Handmaid's Tale, the visual and narrative quality is guaranteed. The trailer already shows some stunning scenes.

And the best news? The premiere finally has a date! The Testaments arrives on streaming services internationally in mid-2024. For Irish viewers, the series is expected to land on Disney+ (via Star), keeping up the tradition of bringing the best of the Hulu universe to us. So, you can start planning your marathon schedule and get the friends together for some conspiracy theories.

At the end of the day, this is one of those series that you know will hurt, will make you think, but will also warm your heart seeing that, even in the darkest places, resistance always finds a way to sprout. Now, we just have to manage the anticipation until the big day.
