Bad weather on the way: cold, rain, and tips to get you through the weekend

Cold in Milan: grey skies and freezing air

Right then, what a turn in the weather! Anyone living in Milan like me knows it well: this morning felt like January, with that bitter wind cutting right through you. And we're not alone; it's the same story across half of Italy. After a few days of spring sunshine, the bad weather has come knocking again, and it means business.

Arctic chill and rain: the weather's taking a turn

Just one look at the grey sky over Milan tells you winter hasn't quite packed its bags yet. A cold front is sweeping down from Northern Europe, sending temperatures plummeting and bringing rain just about everywhere. Snow's made a comeback in the mountains, and even down on the plains, there's a real nip in the air. If you'd got used to the milder days, get ready to dig out that heavy coat again.

A weekend of ups and downs: sunshine and showers

So, what's in store for the weekend? It's not straightforward, because this bad weather isn't letting up. Saturday might start with a few brighter spells, but by the afternoon, the clouds and rain will be back. Sunday will be a proper mix: glimpses of sun one minute, sudden downpours the next. Basically, if you've got a day out planned, take your brolly and your sunnies – you never know. The forecasters say this unsettled spell will last at least until the middle of next week, so hold off on packing away the winter woollies just yet.

How to prepare (and not get caught out)

When bad weather hits, we Brits are used to making do, but a bit of forward planning never hurts. Here's my top tips for seeing off the spring madness:

  • Layer up: Think thin layers. That way, if the sun does pop out, you can shed a layer, and if the cold bites, you're ready.
  • Secure the balcony: Tuck away plants, cushions, and any loose bits and bobs. If you've got a Hoyer Baule weatherproof storage box, now's the time to use it: sturdy, waterproof, just chuck everything in and forget about it.
  • Check your brolly and shoes: There's nothing worse than stepping out to find your umbrella's bust or your shoes are letting in water.
  • Keep an eye on the forecast: Even if it changes quickly, a quick check in the morning helps you dodge any surprises.

Stuck indoors… time for a plan

And when it's absolutely tipping it down outside and you can't even stick your nose out? Well, plenty of people make the most of it, getting cosy on the sofa and catching up on indoor hobbies. I know a few folks who, on these rainy days, have started studying forex strategies. After all, if the weather's as unpredictable as the markets, why not use the time to get your head around trading? Maybe while it's thundering and lightning outside, you'll crack the code to trading yen. Joking aside, the advice is this: turn a gloomy afternoon into a chance to learn something new, whether that's cooking, finance, or just getting stuck into a good book.

So, this bad weather is going to be hanging around for a while, but with a bit of savvy prep and an open mind, we'll get through it. Right, I'm off to fetch my Hoyer Baule from the cellar and check tomorrow's forecast. You lot stay prepared and, above all, don't forget the cuppa!
