The SOKO Munich investigation team on the hunt for clues

It's Sunday evening, the living room lights are dimmed, and the iconic theme tune is kicking off the opening credits on the telly. For many of us in Bavaria and across Germany, it's as much a part of the week as a good pint with your crisps. We're talking, of course, about SOKO Munich – known to some as "SOKO 5113". While some of you might be reminiscing about the really old cases from the 80s, others are on the edge of their seats for the brand-new investigations. I've been having a look at where the Munich special task force is headed next.

New Series, Same Certainty: Murder in Bavaria

If you reckon that after over 45 series the show's run out of steam, you don't get the winning formula. SOKO Munich/Series 45 and the upcoming SOKO Munich/Series 46 prove that the makers know their stuff. It's not always the most spectacular crimes that need solving. Often, it's the quiet, dark undercurrents in the Bavarian countryside or the big city that bring the team in. That's exactly what gives it its charm. While back in SOKO Munich/Series 4 they were investigating with no tech in sight, there's a lot of gadgetry involved now – but the inspectors' gut instinct is still their sharpest tool.

TV Repeats: The Old Classics and Recent Cases

The mix in the schedule is interesting. It's not just all about the newest stuff. The viewers are loyal and want to see the classics too. For instance, on the BBC (similar to public-service broadcasters) right now, they're repeating an episode many might have missed: it's SOKO Munich/Series 44, specifically Episode 22. If you missed it or fancy watching it again at your leisure, there are a few ways to do it. The public service broadcasters really know how to dig out their gems. And looking at the TV guide, it's a smart move. There's a nice connection being made between the almost retro-feel cases from SOKO Munich/Series 35 and the current ones in crystal-clear HD.

Why We Love SOKO Munich

What is it, actually, that's kept us glued to this series for decades? I've got a theory about it:

  • Local Pride: You recognise the locations. Marienplatz, the Werksviertel district, the banks of the Isar. It's our home turf, even if there's murder going on there on screen.
  • The Characters: The detectives aren't invincible supercops. They're gritty, sometimes grumpy, but their hearts are always in the right place. You know their quirks and you love them for it.
  • The Pace: Unlike a lot of frantic US shows, SOKO takes its time. Time to set the scene, to focus on the suspects, and to get under the skin of the Bavarian psyche.

Verdict: More Than Just a Crime Drama

SOKO Munich is an institution. Whether you're watching the latest episodes from Series 45 or you've landed on a repeat of Series 35 on the sofa – it feels like coming home. The series constantly manages to tell gripping stories without ever trying to be something it's not. I'm definitely looking forward to the new cases and I'm curious to see what the team has in store for Series 46. One thing's for sure: things never get boring in Munich – at least, not for the SOKO team.
