Cloudy sky on the coast of Málaga

My grandmother always used to say, and she wasn't wrong: "Don't take off your jumper till May." And today, March 5th, we're seeing exactly why here in Málaga. Early on, the sky had that familiar leaden grey that those of us who've lived here for years know all too well. You could see it coming, and as often happens around these parts, the rain arrived right as the morning got going. In Torremolinos and along the entire coastline, the drops didn't take long to appear, with the temperature taking a sudden dive. A far cry from the warm spell we had last week.

A Thursday for brollies and jackets

Anyone who left home without a coat is regretting it now. The thermometer is hovering around 15 degrees, and it feels more like a winter's day than the start of spring. According to the forecasts, these showers will stick with us throughout the day, especially in parts of the Axarquía region and the city itself. So, you know the drill: if you have to head out, best grab your brolly and take it easy – traffic in the MA-20 tunnels grinds to a halt the moment the first drop falls.

But it's not all bad. Days like this, when the sky opens up and the air smells of wet earth, have their own charm. They're an invitation to stay home, put on a movie, cook something warm and comforting. And for tourists who've chosen Málaga for a break, it's the perfect chance to discover that the province knows how to be welcoming indoors too. You just need to find the right spot to stay.

Plan B for a rainy day: charming stays with a pool

These cloudy days are exactly what make you appreciate a good refuge. If you're after something more than just a basic flat, inland Málaga has options that turn the rain into a spectacle. Picture waking up in a rural farmhouse with a private pool near the Iznájar Reservoir. The sound of raindrops on the water, the scent of nature, and the bliss of not having to move the car. Now that's what I call true relaxation and nature.

For those who prefer the city, there are also hideaways designed so you don't have to sacrifice comfort. A city house with a private pool could be the perfect plan: spend the morning exploring the historic centre, and when the rain sets in, head back to your little oasis. There are some really lovely options, like a 70 m² apartment with 2 bedrooms for 4 guests, ideal for a family or a couple with friends. And if space is what you're after, a 150 m² apartment with 2 bedrooms for 5 guests gives you room to even organise a board game afternoon while it pours outside.

A few ideas that might come in handy:

  • 60 m², 2 bedrooms, 4 guests: Perfect for a weekend getaway, with everything you need to feel at home.
  • City house with private pool: Located in quiet areas, but close to the action. Ideal for relaxing without getting wet.
  • Rural farmhouse near the Iznájar Reservoir with private pool: Total immersion in nature. The views of the lake on grey days are absolutely stunning.
  • 150 m² apartment, 2 bedrooms, 5 guests: Spacious, bright (even under clouds) and with room for everyone.

How long will the rain last?

Forecast models suggest this weather front will start to ease off towards Friday, although skies will remain cloudy. The weekend might offer a bit of a reprieve, but don't expect brilliant sunshine. So, until the good weather arrives, it's time to adapt. And what better way to do that than from a warm bed, with the sound of rain in the background and a cup of tea in hand?

Here in Málaga, we know the weather is changeable, and that's exactly why we learn to enjoy each day as it comes. Today, for sure, is a day to take it easy, to slow down the pace and, who knows, maybe even dream about the next escape to a whitewashed village or the lake. Whatever happens with the sky above, Málaga always has something good to offer.
