Overnight Blaze in Palmerston North's Milson Suburb
Night of Fear in Milson as Fire Takes Hold
It was a long, tough night for our local firies. A huge fire ripped through a commercial building in Milson last night, with the Palmerston North Fire Brigade working flat out to bring it under control. Crews from right across the city, including the main Palmerston North Fire Station, were called out just before midnight.
Locals have told us the flames were absolutely roaring through the structure. The size of the blaze meant multiple trucks were needed, and the smoke was thick enough to hang over the whole neighbourhood. It was clearly going to be a long haul for the crews on the ground.
Our Firies Did Us Proud
Fair go to them—the Palmerston North Fire Brigade showed exactly why they're the backbone of this community. They worked tirelessly through the night to stop the fire spreading to nearby homes and businesses. No word yet on what caused it; investigators will be sifting through the wreckage today. The main thing is no one was hurt, even though the building is absolutely gutted.
A Good Time to Check Your Own Place
Look, a fire like this really makes you think. If you've got a stack of firewood for winter, make sure it's not piled up hard against the house. Flying embers are a real danger in a fire. It's also a bloody good time to have a chat with the experts at fire safety services in Palmerston North about your smoke alarms and extinguishers. You don't want to get caught out.
A few quick things to tick off your list this weekend:
- Alarms: Hit that test button—if it doesn't screech, replace the battery.
- Firewood: Keep piles well away from walls or fences.
- Plan: Make sure everyone in the house knows two ways out and a meeting spot outside.
- Kitchen: Never leave cooking unattended. Simple as that.
Still on Scene This Morning
As of this morning, crews are still on site damping down hotspots. It'll be a while before we know exactly what happened, but the respect for the firies who fought this one is massive. I'll update you when more comes through.
